We’ve made no secret about our dislike of the flash platform, we’ve been asked a number of times to utilise flash by clients and we’ve always managed to respectfully talk them out of it.
Flash has had its day, it was pretty cool but we’ve moved on and we have slick new web standards with gorgeous, multifunctional technologies like HTML5, flash is too resource heavy and clunky for 2011, Apple (specifically the late, great Steve Jobs) HATE the flash platform and refused to have it running on iPhones, iPods, iPads etc. Even Android based devices are turning their backs.

This weekend I came across a website entitled Occupy Flash. These guys are the self appointed official movement for the death of the platform the site looks pretty slick and asks, their main goal?
To get the world to uninstall the Flash Player plugin from their desktop browsers.

When it comes to web design, perception plays a huge role in success. Your website is your home on the internet and how you present it is exactly how your audience will perceive you, exactly the same way that if you had a high street shop that was dirty, cluttered and badly put together, people wouldn’t spend very much time in there and would be very unlikely to re-visit.
We take bounce rates very seriously here, the worse the design, the higher the bounce rate, this effectively means that visitors are taking one look at a site and getting out of there as fast as they can! One of our favourite kind of projects is a redesign, it’s like that show pimp my ride except we’d never put a pool table in the trunk of your car, that’s just silly.
Me and Pea would like to welcome you to our fresh site! Fresh in the sense that it’s brand new, fresh in a sense that it’s nice and light and uncluttered and fresh in that it’s FREEEEEESSSSHHH!
We based our original look on my obsession with 8-bit, classic gaming and the whole Famicom aesthetic. As much as I love this world, it’s time for me to grow up and come to terms with the fact that not every body else does, not to mention the old style did not reflect very well on our abilities.
I’m so proud to share our new site with you, it will continue to evolve as the company does and we hope you like the new personal touches.
2012 is fast approaching and we’re entering a new chapter of the 1upWeb story, we’re working with lots of cool people from many different industries and walks of life, not to mention the ongoing mobile app projects we have. In a bid to push the “personal touch” further both Pea and I will be more active with this blog, our Facebook page and our twitter account. We love what we do and if we can help you, we’d love to hear from you!

Before I get into this, I’m not writing this as a rant, just a word of caution! I’ve been thinking about this for a while and thought I’d share with you.
When we’re speaking to prospective clients, one of the main issues that keeps coming up again and again is Mr Site.
Mr Site is a “website in a box” option that appeals to folks who want a fast, cheap solution to getting themselves online.
Obviously we’re all for people getting themselves a website BUT the sheer amount of issues that this product causes just doesn’t seem worth it. (feel free to see some real-time rants here )
If you were opening a shop to sell your products (an real life actual shop made of bricks and mortar!), what would you fit your shop with, something designed specifically for you and your product OR a cheap MDF template that “should do the job ok” but doesn’t look or work exactly how you need it to? The levels of customisation are incredibly limited and not terribly inspiring.
Downtime is also a big issue, you need your site available to everyone, most folks won’t come back if they even see a hint of “404-Page not found”, we are SUPER picky about which host to recommend to our clients, it appears that the worst time to view a Mr Site website is the weekend, why would you put your visitors through this? Why would you put yourself through this??
One other thing, lots of people seem to be using Wix to build their site, this all looks very pretty until you try and view it on an iPhone or iPad, as it’s a flash based service, it won’t even display on these types of devices. This might not seem too big an issue but iOS accounts for the most web traffic on a portable device, why would you alienate that amount of people?
Anyway, I’ll leave you with this, you get what you pay for and it appears that quite a lot of people pay for something that is full of bugs, looks bad and won’t be there for you when you really need it. Custom made is always best!
Hey Ladies and Gents, just wanted to give a small update as to how 2011 is shaping up already!

2011 also marks the year that we’ll be able to unleash some of the software ideas we’ve been cultivating ranging from iOS apps for the iPhone and iPad, Android apps for phones/tablets and even some software aimed at the teaching community.
